01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Nardi 750 Allemano is a limited-production Italian sports coupé introduced in 1951, resulting from the collaboration between engineer Enrico Nardi, stylist Giovanni Michelotti, and coachbuilder Carrozzeria Allemano. The vehicle reflects the post-war Italian tradition of constructing lightweight, performance-oriented machines for both road use and motorsport competition. Its design and execution place it within the broader context of early 1950s small-displacement sports cars, which emphasized mechanical efficiency, bespoke craftsmanship, and aerodynamic form. The chassis employed a tubular steel structure, upon which an aluminum body was mounted. The bodywork, designed by Michelotti and built by Allemano, exhibited a streamlined profile with a low roofline, integrated fenders, and minimal ornamentation. These elements were indicative of contemporary aerodynamic thought and intended to reduce drag while maintaining visual elegance. The cockpit was arranged for two occupants and focused on essential instrumentation and controls, prioritizing the engagement of the driver. Power was provided by a front-mounted, naturally aspirated 747 cubic centimeter inline-four engine. This unit, developed by Nardi, produced approximately 43 horsepower at 5,500 revolutions per minute and was coupled to a four-speed manual transmission. Power was delivered to the rear wheels, and the vehicle’s total weight was in the range of 400 kilograms. This configuration allowed for a top speed of approximately 140 kilometers per hour, a notable figure for a vehicle in its class during the period. The Nardi 750 Allemano was constructed in very limited numbers, and exact production figures remain uncertain. Each example was handcrafted, contributing to its rarity and distinctiveness. While not widely campaigned in international competition, the model’s technical layout and styling garnered attention within specialist circles and among collectors appreciative of Italian coachbuilt automobiles. As an expression of post-war automotive innovation and artisan collaboration, the Nardi 750 Allemano occupies a place of significance in the history of low-volume sports car manufacture. Its existence illustrates a moment in time when engineering initiative, aesthetic clarity, and individual craftsmanship converged to produce vehicles of enduring historical interest.
