01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Triumph Zobo Coupé prototype was the first Herald-bodied prototype to reach Coventry, arriving on Christmas Eve 1958. It was constructed on chassis X580 and represented the earliest fully resolved expression of the Zobo program in physical form. Unlike later experimental variants, the coupé already displayed the definitive body line, establishing the proportions and overall silhouette that would be carried into series production. The body was designed by Giovanni Michelotti and built in Turin by Carrozzeria Vignale. Compared with the four-door saloon, the coupé adopted a lower roofline, longer doors, and a more compact rear volume. The side profile emphasized continuity between the front fenders, door cut, and rear quarter, producing a balanced two-door configuration without altering the underlying structural hard points shared across the Zobo family. Although the overall form was final, minor details differed from the later production version. Subsequent changes included revisions to the front grille design and the introduction of door-mounted wind deflectors, which were not present on the X580 prototype. These adjustments were made during the transition from prototype to production to refine airflow management and improve occupant comfort, without altering the fundamental body architecture. The interior of the coupé prototype featured a notable provisional element: a Fiat Topolino steering wheel. Its use reflected the rapid assembly schedule and the functional nature of the prototype, which was intended for evaluation rather than presentation. Interior components were installed primarily to verify driving position, visibility, and control layout. Mechanically, the coupé shared the developing Herald chassis, including independent front suspension and the advanced steering geometry engineered at Alford & Alder. The tight turning circle specified for the Zobo program was already incorporated, confirming its applicability across all body styles. The car was originally meant to be sold under the Standard brand.
