01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Armstrong Siddeley Whitley Coupé by Ghia is a singular prototype vehicle resulting from a collaboration between the British automotive manufacturer Armstrong Siddeley and the Italian design firm Carrozzeria Ghia. Constructed in 1951 and presented at the 1952 Turin Motor Show, the vehicle was intended as a demonstration of the potential for integrating British engineering with contemporary Italian design aesthetics. The Whitley model, introduced by Armstrong Siddeley in 1949, served as the basis for the prototype. It featured a 2.3-litre overhead-valve inline-six engine producing approximately 75 horsepower. Transmission options included a four-speed manual gearbox or the firm’s well-known Wilson pre-selector system. The chassis incorporated independent front suspension with torsion bars and a live rear axle supported by semi-elliptic leaf springs. Braking was provided through a Girling hydro-mechanical system, with hydraulic operation at the front and mechanical linkage at the rear. Ghia’s design for the coupé departed significantly from the conservative styling of Armstrong Siddeley’s production saloons. The coachwork presented a streamlined profile with a sloping roofline, modest tailfins, and a simplified front fascia. The integration of form and proportion reflected the emerging post-war Italian design language, which emphasized elegance and aerodynamic flow while maintaining a sense of restrained luxury. Despite favorable reception at its debut, the Whitley Coupé by Ghia remained a one-off prototype. No production model followed, likely due to a combination of high development costs, limited projected demand, and Armstrong Siddeley’s focus on conventional upper-middle-class and executive vehicles. The project nonetheless illustrated the possibilities of Anglo-Italian cooperation in automotive design during a period of increasing international exchange within the industry. The Armstrong Siddeley Whitley Coupé by Ghia occupies a distinctive place in automotive history as an example of mid-century transnational coachbuilding. It reflects both the engineering priorities of post-war Britain and the stylistic innovation associated with Italian carrozzerie, offering insight into the design ambitions and market considerations of the early 1950s European automotive sector.
