01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A S, completed in 1927 with Torpedo-Bateau coachwork by Carrozzeria Cesare Sala, represents an early sporting interpretation of Isotta Fraschini’s flagship chassis. The body design is attributed to Oliviero Bergomi, chief designer at Sala, whose work during the second half of the 1920s combined formal elegance with emerging aerodynamic sensibilities. Introduced in 1924, the Tipo 8A was Isotta Fraschini’s top-level chassis and was supplied exclusively as a rolling platform for bespoke coachbuilding. The “S” designation identified a lighter and more performance-oriented specification within the Tipo 8A range, intended to carry less formal bodies than the large limousines and landaulets commonly associated with the model. The Tipo 8A S was powered by a 7,370 cc inline eight-cylinder engine with overhead valves and an aluminium crankcase. Designed for smooth torque delivery and sustained high-speed touring, the engine produced approximately 115–135 horsepower depending on tuning. Power was transmitted via a three-speed manual gearbox to a live rear axle. The chassis incorporated four-wheel servo-assisted mechanical drum brakes, semi-elliptic leaf springs front and rear, and a long wheelbase suitable for large open bodies. Suspension tuning emphasized stability and ride comfort while allowing higher cruising speeds than earlier Isotta Fraschini models. Sala’s Torpedo-Bateau body reflected late-1920s stylistic trends, combining open touring functionality with streamlined volume treatment. The design featured a long bonnet, flowing fenders, a tapered rear body, and a low windshield, producing a continuous silhouette that reduced visual mass compared with upright touring cars. Construction followed traditional coachbuilding practice, using a wooden frame covered by hand-formed metal panels. Decorative elements were restrained, allowing proportion and surface continuity to define the car’s character. Interior layout accommodated multiple passengers in open configuration, intended for leisure and social use. The Torpedo-Bateau format emphasized openness and visibility while retaining the prestige expected of an Isotta Fraschini.
