01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Alfa Romeo Giulietta Caprera was a limited-production coachbuilt variant constructed circa 1958 by Carrozzeria Caprera of Turin. It was based on the mechanical underpinnings of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta series (Tipo 750/101), specifically the Berlina variant. The vehicle represented a low-volume rebodying effort typical of smaller Italian ateliers during the late 1950s, aimed at producing individualized designs outside of Alfa Romeo’s standardized offerings. The chassis employed was derived from the Giulietta Berlina platform, featuring a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration. The engine was Alfa Romeo’s 1,290 cc inline four-cylinder unit with double overhead camshafts, an aluminum alloy cylinder head, and hemispherical combustion chambers. In its standard specification, the engine produced approximately 65 horsepower, with Veloce-tuned versions reaching outputs near 80 to 90 horsepower. The powertrain was coupled to a four-speed manual gearbox. Suspension consisted of an independent double wishbone arrangement at the front and a live rear axle with coil springs. Braking was handled by drum assemblies on all four wheels in early examples; later units may have featured front disc brakes, depending on mechanical donor specification. The coachwork was executed entirely by Carrozzeria Caprera in aluminum. The body followed the proportions of a compact two-seat spider or barchetta, featuring a low beltline, abbreviated windscreen, cycle-type front wings, and a fastback rear profile. The overall design shared thematic similarities with the factory-designed Giulietta Spider, but with distinct detailing and altered panel geometry. The body was likely mounted on a reinforced or shortened version of the Berlina chassis, though no technical drawings or surviving factory specifications confirm this. Production is believed to have been restricted to fewer than ten examples. Caprera’s internal records described the model as a limited commission, and no evidence suggests it was shown at official Alfa Romeo exhibits or sold through factory channels. No confirmed chassis or engine numbers have been made public. Surviving examples, if extant, have not appeared in institutional collections or marque registries. The Giulietta Caprera remains an obscure illustration of regional coachbuilding applied to standardized postwar Italian mechanicals. It reflects the transitional period in which independent carrozzerie pursued individual expression on mass-produced platforms, prior to the consolidation of Italian design under larger industrial bodies.
