01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Abarth 750 Coupé Vignale was introduced in 1964 as part of a series of small-displacement sports cars produced by Abarth & C., utilizing mechanical components sourced from the Fiat 600. The model was bodied by Carrozzeria Vignale of Turin, forming one of several collaborations between Abarth and Italian coachbuilders during the 1950s. The 750 Coupé Vignale was intended for limited production and positioned as a compact grand touring vehicle with enhanced mechanical performance and custom bodywork. The chassis was derived from the Fiat 600 platform, employing a steel monocoque structure with modifications to accommodate Abarth’s upgraded powertrain. The engine was a four-cylinder inline unit with a displacement of 747 cubic centimetres. It featured modifications by Abarth, including a reworked cylinder head, improved intake and exhaust systems, and higher compression. Power output was approximately 47 horsepower at 6,000 revolutions per minute. The transmission was a four-speed manual gearbox with synchromesh on the upper gears. Power was transmitted to the rear wheels. Suspension followed the original Fiat layout, with independent front suspension using coil springs and trailing arms, and a rear swing axle with transverse leaf spring. Braking was provided by hydraulically actuated drums on all four wheels. The wheelbase measured 2,000 millimetres, with an overall length of approximately 3,200 millimetres and a curb weight of 550 kilograms. The vehicle’s maximum speed was reported to be approximately 150 kilometres per hour. The bodywork, constructed by Vignale, was executed in steel with aluminum panels for certain elements. The coupé configuration featured a fixed roof, two seats, and conventional exterior proportions. The styling was conservative in comparison to other Abarth-bodied derivatives of the Fiat 600, such as the more aerodynamically styled Zagato and “Goccia” variants. Production volumes remain undocumented but are believed to have been limited. The Abarth 750 Coupé Vignale illustrates the practice of post-war Italian coachbuilding applied to small-series performance vehicles. It represents the integration of proprietary tuning modifications with tailored bodywork and reflects the commercial and technical partnerships that characterized Italian automotive production during the late 1950s.
