01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Chery A1 is a five-door supermini hatchback produced by the Chinese automaker Chery Automobile between 2007 and 2015. Developed with the intent to appeal to both domestic and international markets, the A1 marked a significant step in Chery’s global strategy. The exterior design of the Chery A1 was crafted by the renowned Italian design firm Bertone, known for its collaborations with European automotive brands. The styling featured streamlined headlights, a curved front bumper, and a compact silhouette, reflecting Bertone’s influence in creating a modern and appealing aesthetic. Under the hood, the A1 was equipped with a 1.3-liter ACTECO SQR473F inline-four engine, developed in collaboration with Austrian engineering firm AVL. This engine produced approximately 83 horsepower and 114 Nm of torque, paired with either a five-speed manual or automatic transmission. The Chery A1 was assembled in various locations, including Wuhu, Anhui, China; Macchia d’Isernia, Italy (by DR Motor Company); Cairo, Egypt (by Speranza); and Aragua, Venezuela (by ZGT). In Italy, it was marketed as the DR2, assembled from semi-knocked down kits and introduced at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. Known by different names in various markets—such as Chery Kimo in Russia and Ukraine, Chery J1 in Australia, and Chery Face in South America—the A1 was tailored to meet regional preferences and regulations. For instance, in Australia, the J1 variant included features like 14-inch alloy wheels, front fog lamps, and a six-speaker CD player. Despite its global reach, the Chery A1 faced challenges in markets with stringent safety regulations. In Australia, for example, the lack of electronic stability control led to its discontinuation in certain states after 2013. Overall, the Chery A1 represents a collaborative effort between Chinese manufacturing and European design expertise, aiming to produce a globally competitive compact car.
