Cowin C3R

The Cowin C3R is a five-door subcompact hatchback produced by Cowin Auto, a brand formed as a spin-off from Chery Automobile. Introduced in April 2015, the C3R was developed as a companion model to the Cowin C3 sedan, sharing its platform and mechanical components. Targeted at younger drivers and consumers in China’s emerging urban markets, the C3R was designed by Torino Design to offer a balance of affordability, practicality, and modern styling in the competitive A-segment. The C3R measures 3,972 mm in length, 1,726 mm in width, and 1,510 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,510 mm. It features a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and rides on the same A1X platform as the sedan. Power is provided by a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated inline-four petrol engine producing 109 horsepower and 140 Nm of torque. Transmission options include a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic. The car’s curb weight is approximately 1,206 kg. Interior equipment in the Cowin C3R includes a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system offering Bluetooth connectivity, GPS navigation, USB and MP3 support. Additional standard features comprise manual air conditioning, remote central locking, and fabric upholstery. Safety equipment includes dual front airbags, ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), ISOFIX anchor points, and rear parking sensors. In October 2016, Cowin Auto expanded the lineup with the C3R EV, an electric variant of the hatchback. The EV model is equipped with a 57-horsepower electric motor delivering 150 Nm of torque. It offers a driving range of approximately 200 kilometers on a full charge and reaches a top speed of around 100 km/h. The electric version was aimed at the urban mobility segment and contributed to Cowin’s broader strategy of offering alternative-energy vehicles. Production of the Cowin C3R and its variants continued until 2020. Alongside the C3 sedan, the C3R helped to establish Cowin Auto’s brand presence, particularly in the budget-friendly and entry-level segments of the Chinese domestic market. It served as an accessible option for drivers seeking basic, reliable transportation with modest technological and safety features.
