01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Volvo P1800 GT Fissore, unveiled at the 1965 Turin Motor Show, was a unique creation that showcased the collaboration between Volvo and the renowned Italian design house and coachbuilder Fissore. This fastback coupé was designed to offer a sportier and more dynamic interpretation of the already successful Volvo P1800, which had gained recognition for its sleek lines and sturdy build. Fissore’s design for the P1800 GT featured a streamlined, fastback roofline that gave the car a more aggressive, aerodynamic appearance compared to the original model. The overall silhouette was refined and sophisticated, with a sleek curve that accentuated the car’s athletic profile. The GT version was aimed at attracting customers who desired a sportier alternative, but Volvo did not fully embrace the design, opting to continue with the original P1800. While the P1800 GT Fissore was visually appealing, Volvo felt that the differences between the two versions were not substantial enough to warrant a separate model in production. The car’s refined Italian styling, coupled with Volvo’s engineering prowess, made it a standout at the 1965 Turin Motor Show, but unfortunately, it remained a one-off prototype. Despite its favorable reception from the public, the P1800 GT Fissore did not enter mass production, as Volvo chose to focus on the more traditional design of the P1800. Nonetheless, the P1800 GT Fissore holds a special place in automotive history as an example of Italian craftsmanship and innovation applied to a classic Swedish model, blending the best of both worlds. Though it did not achieve commercial success, the Volvo P1800 GT Fissore remains an interesting and important concept in Volvo’s history, showcasing a bold vision of what the P1800 could have been if it had taken a more sporty, fastback direction.
