01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Volvo 760 proposal by Italdesign from 1982 remains a fascinating “what-if” in automotive history. Created by the renowned design firm Italdesign, led by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the concept presented a fresh and more modern take on the Volvo brand’s typically conservative design language. The proposal showcased a sleek, aerodynamic, and more angular design compared to the boxy lines that Volvo cars were known for at the time. This styling concept was intended to offer a blend of luxury and performance while maintaining Volvo’s emphasis on safety and durability. However, the proposal was not well-received by Volvo’s chief designer, Jan Wilsgaard, who had a very specific vision for the brand’s aesthetic. Wilsgaard, known for his iconic designs like the Volvo 240 and 740, felt that the Italdesign proposal did not align with the brand’s traditional design language and values. His preference for a more pragmatic and functional approach to design ultimately led to the decision that the Volvo 760 Italdesign proposal would remain just that—a styling exercise rather than a production model. As a result, the proposal never made it to the production line, and Volvo opted to continue developing the 760 with a more traditional design direction. Nonetheless, the Italdesign proposal remains an intriguing moment in the brand’s history, demonstrating the potential for a more forward-thinking and modern Volvo design. It also reflects the balance that often has to be struck between innovative external design input and the internal philosophy of a brand’s design team. Although the 1982 proposal never came to fruition, it continues to be appreciated by automotive enthusiasts as an example of what might have been.
