01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Stutz Diplomatica is a limited-production luxury limousine manufactured by the Stutz Motor Car of America between 1981 and 1985. Positioned between the standard-length IV-Porte and the extended-wheelbase Royale, the Diplomatica was conceived as a formal vehicle tailored to diplomatic, ceremonial, and executive transport roles. It combined American platform engineering with Italian coachbuilding, reflecting the marque’s characteristic neoclassical design ethos. The vehicle was constructed on a Cadillac DeVille chassis, utilizing a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration. Power was provided by a Cadillac-supplied V8 engine, typically of 6.0-liter displacement, mated to a three-speed automatic transmission. Mechanical components remained largely unaltered from the donor platform, ensuring ease of maintenance and parts availability within global service networks. Coachwork was executed in Italy by Carrozzeria Saturn, incorporating a design by Paolo Martin. The body exhibited proportions and styling cues consistent with other Stutz models, including a vertical chromed grille, freestanding headlamps, and an exposed faux spare wheel mounted on the rear deck. Chrome trim simulated separated fenders in the manner of pre-war luxury automobiles. The vehicle’s overall length and wheelbase were extended to accommodate enhanced passenger compartment dimensions. Interior appointments were consistent with Stutz’s established emphasis on luxury and ornamentation. Connolly leather upholstery, burled walnut paneling, and gold-plated trim were applied throughout. Passenger amenities included a television, minibar with refrigeration, intercom system, and retractable privacy partition. The configuration of each unit varied according to client requirements. Only seven examples of the Diplomatica are known to have been constructed. Six were reportedly commissioned by members of the Saudi royal family and included state insignia and custom detailing. A seventh vehicle was delivered to the Winfield Racing Stable in the United States. This example was subsequently sold, exported to Israel, and is believed to remain in private ownership.
