01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Senova D70, introduced in 2018, represented a significant departure from its predecessor’s platform and design heritage. Developed by BAIC Motor in collaboration with the Italian design consultancy Granstudio, the model embodied a strategic shift toward greater brand identity and international design integration. This generation was also marketed under the name Zhidao and subsequently rebranded as the Beijing U7 as part of a broader corporate realignment. Departing from the earlier Saab-derived underpinnings of the first-generation D70, the redesigned model adopted a new architecture with updated mechanical systems and a distinct visual identity. The exterior styling was executed under the direction of Lowie Vermeersch at Granstudio, with an emphasis on merging Chinese cultural motifs and contemporary European proportions. The front grille, inspired by the Chinese ideogram for “North,” alluded to the vehicle’s connection with the city of Beijing, while the overall body treatment favored restrained dynamism and geometric clarity. The vehicle’s dimensions—4,785 mm in length, 1,835 mm in width, 1,490 mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2,780 mm—positioned it firmly within the mid-size sedan segment. The model was equipped with a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-four engine, available in two configurations producing 110 and 120 kilowatts respectively. Transmission options included a six-speed automatic and a continuously variable unit, reflecting an emphasis on smooth operation and urban usability rather than overt performance. Internally, the vehicle sought to balance traditional material craftsmanship with contemporary digital features. Natural wood and leather surfaces were combined with wide-format digital displays and a touchscreen interface, forming a cabin environment intended to reflect both heritage and modernity. Seating arrangements and ergonomic design adhered to established comfort standards within the class. The second-generation Senova D70 functioned as a vehicle of transition for BAIC Motor, moving from inherited designs toward independent development with international input. Though its market performance was moderate, it served as a formal statement of the company’s evolving design capabilities and strategic direction in the context of China’s expanding domestic automotive industry. It stands as a product shaped by cross-cultural synthesis and the increasing maturity of the Chinese mid-size sedan category.
