01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Cowin X3 is a compact crossover utility vehicle produced by Cowin Auto, a subsidiary of Chery Automobile Company. Its introduction occurred in 2016, marking the brand’s entrance into the competitive compact SUV segment. The vehicle’s design was executed by the Italian firm Granstudio, under the direction of Lowie Vermeersch, with an emphasis on fusing contemporary design with cost-effective production and mechanical simplicity. Developed on the same platform as the Chery Tiggo 3, the X3 features a five-door configuration and a silhouette that incorporates conventional SUV proportions, including a rear-mounted spare wheel and elevated ground clearance. The vehicle measures 4,335 millimetres in length, 1,796 millimetres in width, and 1,665 millimetres in height, with a wheelbase of 2,530 millimetres. Its exterior treatment prioritizes clean lines and visual robustness intended to appeal to consumers in emerging automotive markets. Powertrains offered over the course of its production include naturally aspirated and turbocharged inline-four engines. Early models were equipped with a 1.6-litre engine producing 93 kilowatts, subsequently replaced by a 1.5-litre unit rated at 85 kilowatts. In 2021, a turbocharged 1.5-litre engine generating 115 kilowatts was introduced, paired with a continuously variable transmission. All configurations employ front-wheel drive and utilize independent MacPherson strut front suspension combined with a rear double-wishbone setup. The cabin of the Cowin X3 was arranged to emphasize digital integration and spatial economy. Standard equipment in later iterations included a 10.1-inch central touchscreen, a 7-inch digital instrument panel, and driver-assistance features such as lane departure warning and blind-spot monitoring. The layout supported smartphone connectivity and incorporated a multifunction steering interface. Production of the Cowin X3 concluded in 2022, coinciding with the corporate reorganization of Cowin Auto into the newly branded Kaiyi Auto. Though the X3 did not introduce technological innovation beyond the industry norm, it fulfilled its role as an accessible, broadly exportable utility vehicle within the compact segment. Its significance lies in its reflection of strategic design outsourcing and market-specific adaptation within the structure of a Chinese state-owned automaker.
