01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Seat Cordoba made its debut at the Bologna Motorshow in 1993, marking its official entry into the automotive market. Simultaneously launched, it shared the stage with the second series of the Seat Ibiza, serving as the sedan variant based on the Ibiza hatchback. This synchronicity highlighted Seat’s commitment to offering a diverse range of vehicles to cater to different preferences within the market. Built upon the same platform as the contemporary Ibiza, the Cordoba also shared its mechanics with both the Ibiza and the third series Volkswagen Polo, set to be released a year later. This strategic platform sharing not only streamlined production processes but also allowed for the incorporation of advanced features and technologies across the models. The Cordoba effectively replaced the Seat Málaga, a three-volume version of the first series of the Ibiza, which had become outdated in comparison to the evolving automotive landscape. Giorgetto Giugiaro, a renowned Italian designer, was responsible for shaping the Cordoba’s distinctive exterior. Characterized by a shorter tail than its predecessor, the Seat Málaga, the Cordoba’s design represented a departure from traditional sedan aesthetics. The front end, derived from the Seat Ibiza, maintained a contemporary and cohesive look, emphasizing Seat’s commitment to modern and stylish design. The release of the Seat Cordoba marked a significant step forward for the Spanish automaker, showcasing its ability to adapt to market demands and technological advancements. The collaboration with Giorgetto Giugiaro and the shared platform with the Ibiza and Volkswagen Polo underscored Seat’s dedication to innovation and design excellence. As the Cordoba made its way into the automotive landscape, it contributed to Seat’s growing reputation as a dynamic and forward-thinking player in the industry. In 1996 Italdesign made a Cabrio version which remained a concept.
