01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Proton EMAS3 was a compact concept vehicle developed by Proton Holdings Berhad in collaboration with Italdesign Giugiaro. Presented in 2010 as part of the EMAS (Eco Mobility Advanced Solutions) series, the EMAS3 formed one of several studies intended to investigate the feasibility of urban mobility through advanced packaging, hybrid technology, and modular design. The project was unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show and represented an early effort by a Southeast Asian automaker to align with emerging trends in sustainable transportation. The EMAS3 was configured as a three-door hatchback with a 3+1 seating arrangement, accommodating three adult passengers and one child. Measuring approximately three meters in overall length, the vehicle was designed to maximize internal volume within a highly constrained external footprint. This objective was supported by the integration of a flat floor and elevated seating positions, enabled by the placement of battery modules below the floor structure. The resulting layout prioritized ingress, egress, and visibility, features of particular relevance to dense urban contexts. Powering the Proton EMAS3 was a series-hybrid drivetrain developed by Lotus Engineering. The system combined a 1.2-liter three-cylinder internal combustion engine, operating primarily as a generator, with an electric traction motor producing a continuous output of 45 kilowatts and a peak of 75 kilowatts. This configuration allowed for a maximum speed of 170 kilometers per hour and an acceleration from standstill to 100 kilometers per hour in approximately 14 seconds. The hybrid arrangement enabled a modest all-electric driving range of 50 kilometers, with full recharging achievable in three hours through a standard electrical outlet. The exterior design emphasized compactness and vertical efficiency, while the interior was characterized by minimalism and digital integration. The dashboard incorporated two TFT displays to manage driver information and vehicle functions, and additional multimedia controls were placed within the central console. Large glass surfaces, including an extended windscreen canopy, contributed to a sense of openness and visual continuity. Although the Proton EMAS3 was not advanced to production, it remains a documented instance of Proton’s experimentation with low-emission vehicle technologies and global design collaboration. It illustrates a specific moment in the evolution of urban mobility discourse, shaped by ecological, spatial, and technological considerations.
