01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Otas KL112 was a fascinating design study that made its debut at the 1970 Turin Auto Salon. Designed by Aldo Sessano and built on the Autobianchi A112 chassis by the coachbuilder Fissore, the car showcased an ambitious reimagining of the humble city car as a sleek and sporty two-seater coupé. It featured an Autobianchi engine developed by Giannini, capable of producing 59 horsepower and reaching a top speed of 165 km/h, which was quite impressive for its class. With the Otas KL112, Sessano expanded on the design principles he had explored with the Mongho, while staying true to a distinctive theme: reinterpreting the body of a widely popular economy car in a sporty and refined key. The result was a sharp, modern coupé that demonstrated how even a utilitarian vehicle could be transformed into something aspirational. The Otas KL112 was not just a striking design; it was also a technical achievement, built with the precision and craftsmanship for which Fissore was renowned. Unfortunately, the broader circumstances of the early 1970s, marked by significant production challenges and economic difficulties, prevented the KL112 from going into small-scale production. It was a missed opportunity, as Sessano’s carefully considered and well-executed reinterpretation of the A112 had the potential to attract enthusiasts seeking an affordable yet stylish sports car. At the Turin Auto Salon, the KL112 sadly remained confined to the corner of the exhibition, viewed as an intriguing one-off rather than a commercially viable project. Despite this, the car’s design and concept were undeniably ahead of their time, and the KL112 still stands as a testament to Sessano’s talent and vision. While it may have been an occasional and experimental exercise, the Otas KL112 embodies the creativity and innovation that defined the golden era of Italian automotive design, leaving enthusiasts to imagine what might have been if it had made it to production.
