01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Moretti 750 Record du Monde, as showcased in the 1957 brochure, was a car that captured the imagination of many enthusiasts at the time. Designed as a compact yet efficient vehicle, the 750 Record du Monde represented Moretti’s commitment to both performance and style. Its sleek, aerodynamic body and refined engineering made it a standout model for the small Italian manufacturer. In 1958, the car underwent an aesthetic update and was renamed the Tour du Monde, in hopes of attracting a broader audience and achieving higher production numbers. The updates made to the car gave it a more modern and appealing look, aligning with the trends of the time and bolstering its market appeal. However, despite the updates and the ambition behind the Tour du Monde, production numbers didn’t reach the expected levels. The combination of the car’s relatively high cost, niche appeal, and limited brand recognition made it difficult for Moretti to scale up production as envisioned. While the 750 Record du Monde and its successor, the Tour du Monde, were undoubtedly well-crafted and impressive for their size, they didn’t enjoy the commercial success that Moretti had hoped for. Nevertheless, the Tour du Monde remains a fascinating chapter in automotive history. Its unique design and the story behind its production stand as a testament to the efforts of a small manufacturer trying to make a mark in a competitive industry. Today, the Moretti 750 Record du Monde and its later iteration continue to capture the attention of collectors and car enthusiasts, appreciated for their distinctive Italian charm and the historical significance of their creation.
