01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Monteverdi Sahara is a luxury off-road vehicle produced in Italy by the italian coachbuilder Fissore between 1978 and 1980. Based directly on the mechanical platform of the International Harvester Scout II, the Sahara represented a more affordable and rational version compared to the more elaborate Safari model, while still maintaining a high level of interior comfort and refinement. The project stemmed from the desire to offer a robust and reliable vehicle with a distinctly European design and finish, capable of competing in the emerging high-end SUV segment. The bodywork of the Sahara retained much of the original Scout design but was personalized by Monteverdi with distinctive styling elements, such as a new front grille with quad headlights and plastic-clad bumpers. The cabin was configured to provide a comfortable driving experience, with high-quality leather or fabric upholstery, air conditioning, and optional accessories like a refrigerator and televisionfeatures that were quite advanced for the time. Technically, the vehicle was equipped with 5.7-liter American V8 gasoline engines, mostly sourced from International or Chevrolet, paired with either three-speed manual or automatic transmissions. It featured four-wheel drive with low-range gearing. In rare cases, it was also offered with a 3.2-liter Nissan SD33 diesel engine, aimed at improving fuel efficiency. The diesel version could reach a top speed of around 145 km/h, while the total weight of the vehicle was approximately 1,950 kilograms. Production was extremely limited, with only around 30 units built, making the Monteverdi Sahara a vehicle of great historical and collectible value. Its appeal lies in the blend of dependable American mechanics and Swiss handcrafted luxury, qualities that today make it a rare icon in the automotive world.
