01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Monteverdi Range Rover was a four-door adaptation of the original Range Rover, introduced by Swiss manufacturer and designer Peter Monteverdi in 1980. At a time when Land Rover’s luxury off-roader was sold as a two-door model, Monteverdi’s project anticipated demand for easier access to the rear seats. It retained the underlying Range Rover mechanical concept while substantially modifying the body structure and passenger openings.
The conversion programme was developed by Monteverdi in collaboration with Italian coachbuilding specialists, with Carrozzeria Fissore associated with body fabrication. The original doors and side structure were revised to accommodate additional rear doors, producing a practical four-door vehicle ahead of Land Rover’s own factory version. The powertrain and four-wheel-drive running gear remained within the Range Rover’s established mechanical family.
The Monteverdi conversion was presented in 1980 and became an important episode in the evolution of the Range Rover body concept. This dossier concerns the coachbuilt four-door programme, not every subsequent factory-built four-door Range Rover. The exact number converted and the attribution of individual vehicles require separate evidence; those figures should not be inferred from later Land Rover production totals.
