01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Mercedes-Benz 170 D Giardinetta by Fissore is a limited-production estate car constructed in 1952–1953 by the Italian coachbuilder Fissore on the mechanical basis of the Mercedes-Benz W136 170 D. This model represents a postwar convergence of German engineering pragmatism and Italian artisanal design, during a period in which independent coachbuilders offered specialized bodywork for otherwise standardized chassis. The W136 platform, introduced prior to the Second World War and continued into the early 1950s, served as a durable and adaptable foundation for such transformations. Equipped with the OM636 diesel enginea 1.8-liter inline-four unitthe 170 D was known for its robustness, economy, and widespread utility, particularly among commercial operators. Output was approximately 40 horsepower, transmitted through a four-speed manual gearbox to the rear axle. While its performance parameters remained unchanged, the Fissore-bodied variant diverged significantly in form and intent from the standard saloon. Fissore, based in Savigliano, Piedmont, executed the transformation with characteristic restraint and attention to proportion. The Giardinetta configuration introduced an elongated roofline, reconfigured rear panels, and a vertical tailgate to accommodate increased cargo volume. Side-hinged rear doors and altered glazing patterns distinguished the vehicle from its factory-produced counterparts. The resulting silhouette was one of functional elegance, neither extravagant nor utilitarian in appearance, suggesting a discreet prestige appropriate to its origin. Interior appointments were modified in accordance with the revised layout, with extended luggage space and, in some instances, foldable seating arrangements to maximize versatility. Materials were consistent with mid-range European standards of the time, emphasizing durability over ornamentation. Production figures for the Mercedes-Benz 170 D Giardinetta by Fissore are not precisely recorded, though surviving examples are exceedingly rare. Chassis number 136.180.02495/53 is known to have been bodied by Fissore in this style, and at various times has appeared in private collections in Switzerland and Northern Italy. Ownership records suggest limited distribution, possibly commissioned on an individual basis rather than through official Mercedes-Benz channels. The model stands as a minor yet telling artifact of early postwar coachbuilding, exemplifying the flexibility of pre-unibody vehicle architecture and the continued viability, at least temporarily, of bespoke automotive production in the face of increasing industrial standardization.
