01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Lancia Flaminia Amalfi, conceived by the visionary mind of Rodolfo Bonetto and brought to life through collaboration with Carrozzeria Boneschi, stands as a bold experiment in automotive design. Bonetto, a luminary in the field with an illustrious track record, imbued the Flaminia Amalfi with his signature style, characterized by a penchant for innovation and a keen eye for aesthetics. Hailing from Milan and boasting an impressive six Compasso d’oro awards, Bonetto was no stranger to acclaim. His design prowess was further honed through his tenure as a design instructor at Ulm in Germany, where he undoubtedly imparted his wisdom to the next generation of creatives. However, despite Bonetto’s pedigree and the collaboration with Boneschi, renowned for their craftsmanship, the Flaminia Amalfi faced an uphill battle. Its angular, almost monumental linesreferred to as Linea Tesaelicited a spectrum of reactions, ranging from admiration to skepticism. Some found its boldness refreshing, while others felt it veered too far from convention. Regrettably, the Flaminia Amalfi remained a solitary creation, unable to spark a production line or even a modest series. The automotive landscape was evolving rapidly, leaving little room for singular experiments like the Amalfi. The era of mass-produced vehicles, backed by formidable resources and efficiency, had eclipsed the feasibility of niche endeavors. Despite its fate as a standalone curiosity, the Lancia Flaminia Amalfi endures as a testament to Bonetto’s daring vision and the creative spirit that thrived in an era of automotive evolution. Though it may not have left a lasting imprint on the industry, its legacy serves as a reminder of the ever-changing tides of design and innovation.
