01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Lancia Aurelia PF200 C Spider is a striking example of Space Era design, capturing the futuristic spirit of the 1950s. Crafted by the renowned Italian coachbuilder Pininfarina, this unique roadster made its debut at the Turin Motor Show and quickly became an icon of Jet Age styling in the automotive world.Built on the Lancia Aurelia chassis, the PF200 C Spider chassis B52-1052 was part of a limited series that included both open-top spiders and coupé versions. Pininfarina even extended this avant-garde design to a Cadillac-based model, highlighting the widespread influence of space exploration on car design during that era. One of the most distinctive features of the PF200 C Spider is its protruding circular nose with a large chromed bezel, reminiscent of the intake of an F-86 Sabre fighter jet. This bold front end gave the car an aggressive and aerodynamic appearance, directly reflecting the era’s fascination with aviation and the Space Race. The sleek, raked windshield and pontoon-style fenders further enhanced its streamlined silhouette, while uninterrupted beltlines led the eye smoothly along the body to a finned tail. At the rear, the car showcased six individual exhaust tips emerging just above the bumper, a design choice that added to its futuristic allure. Over the next four years, Pininfarina produced a handful of similarly styled PF200 models, each varying slightly from the original. While the prototype featured the signature circular nose, subsequent versions adopted more elliptical front ends. Some models retained the bumper-integrated exhausts, while others opted for standard tailpipes. The open-top PF200 spiders also displayed unique characteristics. One version adhered to traditional spider fashion with a removable top and side curtains, offering an authentic open-air driving experience. The other spiders featured wind-up windows and more permanent soft tops, blending the appeal of a convertible with added practicality. The Lancia Aurelia PF200 C Spider remains a testament to the innovative spirit of the 1950s. Its design, heavily influenced by jet aircraft and the excitement of space exploration, left a lasting impact on automotive aesthetics. This rare vehicle not only symbolizes a pivotal moment in car design but also reflects a time when the possibilities of the future seemed limitless.
