01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Lancia Aurelia B53 Cabriolet by Carrozzeria Boneschi is a noteworthy creation from one of Italy’s smaller, less well-known coachbuilders. Carrozzeria Boneschi, founded in 1919 by Giovanni Boneschi, initially made bodies for a variety of chassis from different European manufacturers. However, the company is best known for its work on Lancia and Alfa Romeo platforms, starting with special versions of the Lancia Lambda. The Lancia Aurelia B53 Cabriolet is a prime example of Boneschi’s craftsmanship. Although Boneschi produced a number of designs based on the Aurelia platform, each creation was distinct in style and appearance. It appears that none of these designs were mass-produced, with only one or two units of each style ever being made, leading to a very limited production run of Boneschi-bodied Aurelias. Boneschi’s creations, including the B53 Cabriolet, are characterized by their unique and often bold designs, reflecting the coachbuilder’s ability to experiment and innovate. Despite its relatively small scale of operations compared to other Italian coachbuilders, Boneschi’s work on the Aurelia platform showcases its significant contribution to automotive design and craftsmanship during its operational years. Near the end of the 1950s, Boneschi ceased manufacturing bodies for passenger cars, marking the end of an era for the coachbuilder. However, the legacy of their unique designs, such as the Lancia Aurelia B53 Cabriolet, continues to be celebrated by classic car enthusiasts and collectors. This particular model, the Lancia Aurelia B53 Cabriolet Boneschi, embodies the elegance and innovation of Italian coachbuilding during the mid-20th century, making it a rare and valuable piece in the history of automotive design. Its limited production and distinctive styling ensure that each surviving example is highly prized among collectors, representing a unique chapter in the story of Lancia and Carrozzeria Boneschi.

Historical research note

The private Aurelia register confirms a 1953 Boneschi-bodied B53 Cabriolet one-off at model/body level, but the surviving register evidence does not assign an individual B53 serial. CI listing 50877 therefore remains chassis-unresolved by design.
