01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Lancia Aprilia Sport Cabriolet was a coachbuilt open version of the Aprilia, bodied by Stabilimenti Farina in the late 1930s. It was based on one of Lancia’s most advanced pre-war models, the Aprilia, presented in 1936 and introduced to the market in 1937. The Aprilia used Lancia’s narrow-angle V4 engine, independent suspension on all four wheels and a compact structure designed with close attention to aerodynamics. These technical qualities made it a suitable base for coachbuilt variants, including coupés, berlinettas and cabriolets. Stabilimenti Farina gave the Aprilia a two-door cabriolet body with more elegant and sporting proportions than the standard saloon. The front retained the traditional Lancia vertical grille, framed by separate round headlamps and wide, flowing front wings. The bonnet featured horizontal chrome trim, while the side profile was clean and low, with a long door, a simple beltline and a folding soft top. The rear section was rounded and streamlined, with covered rear wheels and a tapered tail. This treatment gave the car a more refined appearance and reflected the aerodynamic language used by several Italian coachbuilders during the second half of the 1930s. The cabin was arranged as an open touring car, with a low windscreen, two main seats and a compact rear area. The car combined the technical sophistication of the Aprilia chassis with the formal elegance typical of Stabilimenti Farina’s work before the Second World War. Production numbers for this body style are not precisely documented, but surviving examples are rare.
