01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A Double Phaeton, completed in 1925 with coachwork by Carrozzeria Garavini, represents an early bespoke application of Isotta Fraschini’s flagship chassis. Introduced in 1924, the Tipo 8A marked a major step forward in Italian luxury automobile engineering and was supplied exclusively as a rolling chassis for completion by independent coachbuilders according to individual client requirements. The Tipo 8A chassis was powered by a 7,370 cc inline eight-cylinder engine with overhead valves and an aluminium crankcase. The engine was engineered for smoothness, elasticity, and sustained high-speed touring rather than sporting performance, with output generally quoted at approximately 115 horsepower in early specifications. Power was transmitted through a three-speed manual gearbox to a live rear axle. The chassis incorporated four-wheel servo-assisted mechanical drum brakes, semi-elliptic leaf springs front and rear, and a long wheelbase suited to large open and closed luxury bodies. Suspension tuning prioritized ride comfort and stability over varied road surfaces. Garavini’s Double Phaeton body followed a traditional open touring configuration, with two rows of seating and a fully open passenger compartment protected by a folding fabric top. This body style was intended for social and ceremonial use, allowing occupants to travel in open-air conditions while maintaining the dignity associated with high-end automobiles. Construction employed conventional coachbuilding methods, using a wooden frame covered by hand-formed metal panels. Attention was given to panel alignment, structural rigidity, and balanced proportions. Stylistically, the Garavini body reflected mid-1920s luxury conventions, with a long bonnet, upright radiator grille, flowing fenders, and restrained decorative elements. Brightwork was applied sparingly, emphasizing form rather than ornament. The open body configuration allowed for generous access to the passenger area and clear visibility, consistent with the expectations of elite clients during the period. The Tipo 8A Double Phaeton by Garavini is documented as a one-off execution, with no identical examples recorded.
