01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Isotta Fraschini 8A Schieppati, originally built in 1929, is a distinguished example of early 20th-century luxury and engineering excellence. This particular model was a prized possession of a wealthy family in Milan, reflecting the high status and sophistication associated with the Isotta Fraschini brand during that era. However, the onset of World War II had a profound impact on the vehicle’s fate. As the conflict intensified, the Nazi forces requisitioned a vast number of resources and vehicles. The Isotta Fraschini 8A Schieppati, like many other valuable assets, was not spared from this upheaval. In response to the war’s exigencies and the requisitioning of their luxury car, the owner family made a strategic decision to repurpose the 8A Schieppati for a new role. In 1941, the vehicle was converted into a fire engine, and it was subsequently adopted by Milan’s fire brigade. This conversion not only preserved the vehicle but also repurposed it for essential wartime services, reflecting the resourcefulness and resilience of the time. The transformation of the Isotta Fraschini 8A Schieppati from a luxury automobile to a fire engine is a remarkable testament to its robust construction and versatility. The vehicle’s ability to adapt to different roles underscores the quality and durability inherent in its design.
