01 / THE STORY

History & context

The I.DE.A Modulair was a concept vehicle introduced in 1994 by the Italian design and engineering firm I.DE.A Institute. Developed as a study in modular automotive architecture, the Modulair represented a forward-thinking response to the increasing demand for flexible, cost-effective vehicle platforms in the automotive industry. The concept explored how a single structural base could be adapted to create multiple body styles, offering both manufacturing efficiency and design versatility. Building on the ideas previously introduced in I.DE.A Institute’s 1981 VSS (Vettura Sperimentale a Sottosistemi) project, the Modulair utilized a space frame chassis that allowed for interchangeable panels and components. This configuration enabled a high degree of adaptability, making it possible to produce different vehicle types—from hatchbacks to vans or crossovers—on the same underlying platform. The concept anticipated trends that would become increasingly important in the following decades, such as platform sharing and modular design systems used by major automakers today. The body design of the Modulair followed the styling language of the early 1990s, with geometric lines, a tall cabin, and wide glass surfaces designed to maximize visibility and interior volume. The concept was envisioned as a compact people carrier, but the modular chassis could easily support a variety of configurations for private, commercial, or even public transport use. Although technical specifications remain limited, it is assumed that the Modulair would have employed lightweight materials to improve efficiency and reduce production costs. I.DE.A Institute intended the Modulair not just as a show car, but as a demonstration of a new design and engineering philosophy centered on flexibility, sustainability, and economy. This vision included simplified assembly processes, reduced tooling requirements, and ease of repair and upgrading—key benefits in both developed and emerging markets. While the Modulair was never developed into a production vehicle, it remains an important example of I.DE.A Institute’s innovative role in automotive design. Its core principles—modularity, adaptability, and efficiency—continue to inform vehicle architecture, especially in the age of electrification and scalable EV platforms.
