01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Changan Jiexun is a compact multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) produced by Changan Automobile between 2007 and 2011. Also marketed as the Changan Joice, the Jiexun was developed to cater to the growing demand for versatile family vehicles in the Chinese automotive market. The Jiexun features a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and is powered by a 2.0-liter inline-four petrol engine producing approximately 112 kW (150 hp) and 192 Nm of torque. Transmission options included a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic gearbox. The vehicle’s dimensions are 4,445 mm in length, 1,768 mm in width, and 1,640 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,710 mm. It offers seating for up to seven passengers across three rows, making it suitable for larger families or commercial use. In 2008, Changan introduced the Jiexun HEV, marking China’s first domestically developed hybrid vehicle. The hybrid system combined a 1.5-liter petrol engine with an electric motor, resulting in a 20% improvement in fuel economy compared to the non-hybrid version. The Jiexun HEV met the EU-IV emission standards, showcasing Changan’s commitment to environmentally friendly technologies. The development of the hybrid variant involved an investment of approximately 300 million yuan (around $40.7 million) in research and development. The Jiexun’s was designed by Justyn Norek at I.DE.A Institute, an Italian design firm known for its work with various automotive manufacturers. The styling was anticipated by the Fiat Vuscià concept car. The collaboration aimed to blend European styling cues with the practicality required by Chinese consumers. Despite its innovations, the Jiexun faced stiff competition in the domestic market and was eventually discontinued in 2011. However, it remains a significant milestone in China’s automotive history, particularly for introducing the country’s first homegrown hybrid vehicle.
