01 / THE STORY
History & context
The I.DE.A Gritta, a prototype city car, was developed by I.DE.A Institute, showcasing the institute’s ability to create compact, functional, and innovative vehicles. Based on the mechanical components of the popular Fiat “Cinquecento,” the Gritta explored the potential for a new design and approach to city car concepts, emphasizing practicality, efficiency, and style. Designed to meet the needs of urban environments, the Gritta was compact, maneuverable, and offered a modern, forward-thinking design. By reimagining the Fiat Cinquecento’s existing platform, the I.DE.A Institute was able to create a new vehicle that retained the practicality and compact size of its donor car but infused it with fresh styling and advanced features. The city car prototype highlighted I.DE.A’s expertise in design and their ability to push the boundaries of small-car engineering. The Gritta was envisioned to cater to the growing demand for efficient urban mobility solutions, offering a nimble, eco-friendly vehicle suitable for navigating dense city streets. With its small size, lightweight construction, and focus on energy-efficient technologies, the I.DE.A Gritta provided a glimpse into the future of urban transportation, reflecting both the trends of the 1990s and the needs of a rapidly changing automotive landscape. Though the Gritta itself never reached mass production, it served as a valuable experiment in city car design, influencing future concepts and highlighting the capabilities of I.DE.A Institute in creating prototypes that addressed both form and function.
