01 / THE STORY

History & context

The I.DE.A Emerald was a concept car designed by the Italian design and engineering firm I.DE.A Institute and unveiled at the 2005 Shanghai Auto Show. Created during a period of growing interest in the Chinese automotive market, the Emerald was a strategic design study intended to demonstrate the institute’s capabilities in developing modern, globally relevant vehicle concepts tailored for emerging markets. Although specific technical details of the Emerald remain scarce, the concept was envisioned as a compact urban vehicle with a focus on efficiency, space optimization, and design appeal. The car featured a contemporary monovolume silhouette with smooth, aerodynamic lines that emphasized both functionality and aesthetic clarity. It was designed to be easily manufacturable and adaptable to the requirements of developing markets, where compact dimensions, practicality, and affordability are critical. The Emerald’s exterior design projected a forward-looking image, with clean surfaces, a high roofline, and large windows to maximize interior light and visibility. The front end was marked by an integrated grille and headlamp design, a common trend among mid-2000s concept vehicles, while the rear featured a wide hatchback opening for ease of access to the cargo area. Inside, the I.DE.A Emerald prioritized ergonomics and intelligent space usage. The cabin was designed to provide generous room for passengers within a compact footprint, and the interior layout reflected a functional and user-friendly approach. Seating was likely configured to allow flexibility, with folding rear seats to increase cargo space as needed. The dashboard would have included modern but simplified controls, aligning with the cost-conscious yet aspirational expectations of its intended audience. While the Emerald did not reach production, it served as an expression of I.DE.A Institute’s design philosophy and its vision for mobility in a rapidly changing automotive landscape. The concept demonstrated how thoughtful design could address both global trends and localized needs, particularly in high-growth regions like Asia. As a result, the Emerald remains a relevant study in how design studios contribute not only to form and function but also to strategic product planning and market adaptation.
