01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Hispano-Suiza H6 Cabriolet by Stabilimenti Farina shown in this image was awarded First Prize in the Four-Seater Cabriolet category at the 1931 Monte Carlo Concours d’Elegance. The car was built on the Hispano-Suiza H6 chassis, introduced in 1919 and developed under the technical direction of Marc Birkigt. The H6 featured a 6,597 cc inline six-cylinder engine with an overhead camshaft and aluminum construction, producing approximately 135 hp. It was widely regarded as one of the most advanced European luxury chassis of its time and served as a preferred platform for leading custom coachbuilders. This particular cabriolet was bodied by Stabilimenti Farina, one of Italy’s most prestigious coachbuilding firms during the interwar years. The design reflects the formal and refined approach typical of Farina’s early work, prior to the firm’s reorganization as Carrozzeria Farina in the postwar period. Registered in Turin with the license plate 4593-TO, the car was owned by Dr. G. Giraudi, who entered it in the Monte Carlo concours. The cabriolet features balanced proportions, a tall radiator grille, and prominent headlamps mounted on a chromed crossbar. Auxiliary driving lamps are positioned centrally, flanking a Hispano-Suiza badge and highlighting the vertical grille design. The hood is long and louvered, and the sweeping front fenders incorporate side-mounted spare wheels. The bodywork is structured around a four-door configuration with a cabriolet roof design that includes a landau-style folding section at the rear. Rear body lines are conservative, marked by subtle tapering and minimal rear overhang. The award at Monte Carlo reflected both the technical excellence of the Hispano-Suiza chassis and the visual harmony achieved by Stabilimenti Farina’s handcrafted body. As a competition entrant and prize-winner at one of Europe’s most respected concours events, this example remains a notable reference point in pre-war Italian coachbuilding history.
