01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat Topolino Top. L is a one-off interpretation of the electric Fiat Topolino created by GFG Style in 2026 as part of the first automotive collaboration between Fabrizio Giugiaro and Lapo Elkann. Unveiled at Salone Auto Torino on 11 September 2026, Top. L was conceived as the more sporting and emotional of two complementary Topolino specials, the second being the four-seat Top. J. The project deliberately used one of Fiat’s smallest and simplest contemporary vehicles as its basis, exploring how design rather than performance could transform its character. Top. L substantially alters the visual identity of the production Topolino. GFG Style converted the compact vehicle into an open two-seat speedster, eliminating the conventional roof and reducing the design to its most essential elements. Its low, open configuration was intended to give the car a more expressive and irreverent personality without attempting to turn it into a conventional high-performance automobile. Among the cultural references cited for the project was James Dean’s famous Porsche 550, nicknamed “Little Bastard.” Rather than reproducing specific styling elements, GFG Style used the reference to evoke the attitude of a small sports car capable of creating an emotional response independently of outright performance. The body was finished in matte aquamarine, while the interior received matching aquamarine leather upholstery combined with Alcantara inserts. The restrained dimensions of the Fiat therefore contrast with materials and finishes normally associated with bespoke automobiles. The name Top. L refers to “Love,” complementing the “Joy” represented by Top. J. Both cars were conceived around the idea that desirability and automotive character are not necessarily determined by power, speed or price. Top. L also reflects GFG Style’s broader role as a Turin-based design and development company capable of taking one-off projects from the initial idea through styling, development and construction of a functioning vehicle.
