01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat Panda Tempo Libero was a one-off leisure vehicle bodied by Carrozzeria Boneschi and presented at the 1988 Turin Motor Show. Based on the Fiat Panda 4×4, it was conceived as a small multi-purpose vehicle for outdoor use, combining the compact dimensions and four-wheel-drive ability of the Panda with a more practical rear body. The car was designed as a light recreational vehicle, able to carry sports equipment and, when needed, function as a very small camper by folding the rear seats. Its purpose was not elegance, but utility. The Panda Tempo Libero had a taller and more functional rear section, intended to increase usable space while preserving the Panda’s ability to travel on narrow mountain roads, rough tracks and difficult rural routes. The prototype remained for more than twenty years in the ownership of Carrozzeria Boneschi, before passing to a historic Fiat dealer. It later disappeared from public view and was rediscovered by Turin collector Simone Bertolero, who had first seen it in a book dedicated to Boneschi. The importance of the Panda Tempo Libero goes beyond the prototype itself. Its concept directly inspired the small series of Pandambulanza vehicles built by Boneschi. These were emergency vehicles based on the Panda 4×4, developed for areas where a normal ambulance could not easily pass. Thanks to their small size and four-wheel-drive system, they were especially useful in mountain villages and narrow roads. The Pandambulanza was equipped with a stretcher and additional medical equipment. One example was donated to the Comune di Courmayeur in 1991 and used for years by local doctor Pietro Bassi, a pioneer of mountain rescue in the area. It also served during emergency operations connected with the Mont Blanc tragedy. The Fiat Panda Tempo Libero is therefore an unusual but significant Boneschi project: a small, practical concept car that anticipated a real rescue vehicle, proving how a modest Fiat Panda could become a useful tool in difficult terrain.s no assumptions can be made regarding its specifications.
