01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 850 Coupé by Moretti was a limited-production coachbuilt variant of the Fiat 850, manufactured in Turin between 1965 and 1968. Based on the standard Fiat 850 Coupé platform (Tipo 100G), the model featured custom bodywork and interior modifications executed by Moretti, one of Italy’s most prolific low-volume coachbuilders of the post-war period. The model represented an effort to elevate Fiat’s entry-level coupé into a more refined, bespoke category while retaining mechanical continuity with the mass-produced donor vehicle. The mechanical configuration remained unchanged from the standard 850 Coupé. The engine was a rear-mounted, water-cooled inline four-cylinder unit of 843 cc, fitted with a single overhead valve per cylinder. In base specification, it produced approximately 47 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. Power was transmitted to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox. Suspension consisted of independent front transverse leaf springs and rear swing axles. Braking was provided by front disc brakes and rear drums. The wheelbase measured 2,025 mm, with a curb weight in the range of 670 to 690 kilograms. It featured subtle stylistic departures from the Fiat 850 Coupé, including a reprofiled roofline, revised front and rear treatment, and modified glass apertures. The overall design was more formal and restrained than the later Moretti 850 Sportiva. The body was constructed in steel over the standard Fiat monocoque structure. Interiors were equipped with bespoke upholstery and trim, often in leather or imitation leather, with optional wood veneer dashboards and auxiliary instrumentation. Production figures remain imprecise. While some period sources suggest up to 300 units were constructed across all Fiat 850-based Moretti variants, Giovanni Moretti later stated that approximately 40 examples of this specific coupé version were completed. Most vehicles were sold within Italy and Switzerland, with a limited number exported to Germany and France. No definitive chassis registry exists. Known surviving examples are few and reside in private collections. The Fiat 850 Coupé by Moretti represents one of the final expressions of postwar Italian artisanal coachbuilding applied to small-displacement production cars, marking the decline of independent carrozzerie in the face of growing industrial consolidation.
