01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 600 Spider by Carrozzeria Boneschi, unveiled at the 1956 Turin Auto Salon, was a one-off show car that reimagined the newly launched Fiat 600 through the lens of expressive, coachbuilt design. Unlike the mass-produced city car it was based on, this spider was conceived as a stylistic exercise—a display of how a humble utility vehicle could be transformed into a fashionable open-top automobile. Built by Boneschi, a Milan-based coachbuilder known for its bold, sometimes futuristic interpretations, the Fiat 600 Spider featured an entirely bespoke body. Its compact and rounded proportions were emphasized by sweeping fender lines, a low, open stance, and a striking two-tone paint scheme—typically black over ivory or pastel, with sharp dividing accents following the shoulder line and hood contours. At the front, the car retained only a loose resemblance to the production 600. The headlights were repositioned higher into the fenders, while the grille area was minimal, flanked by bright trim. The most notable feature was the side treatment: the pronounced crease extending from the front wheel arch to the rear fender, echoed by the contrasting paint band and decorative chrome element on the doors. The rear deck, deeply sculpted and wide, hinted at American design influences, possibly drawing from contemporary Chrysler or Packard convertibles. Inside, the car followed the minimalist Fiat format but was upgraded with custom upholstery and likely bespoke switchgear. Though it never reached production, the Boneschi 600 Spider served as a clear demonstration of how versatile the Fiat 600 chassis could be in the hands of an imaginative carrozzeria. Today, it remains a rare and visually engaging artifact of Italy’s mid-century custom coachbuilding era, remembered as a stylish footnote in postwar automotive experimentation.
