01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 132 Coupé Moretti is a rare, custom-built two-door coupé developed by Carrozzeria Moretti between 1972 and the mid-1970s. Based on the Fiat 132 sedan platform, the model represents a unique interpretation of Italian coachbuilding, combining the mechanical robustness of Fiat with Moretti’s distinctively crafted bodywork and interior refinement. Only a handful of units were produced, making it one of the most exclusive derivatives of the Fiat 132. The coupé’s design is markedly different from the standard Fiat 132. Most notably, it features a fastback roofline and a bespoke coupé body with clean, angular lines. The front fascia is distinguished by a highly unusual lighting arrangement: three pairs of round headlamps set into a rectangular housing across a slim grille. This six-lamp configuration gives the car a unique frontal identity, both futuristic and aggressive for its time. Side profile elements include a sharply drawn beltline, slim B-pillars, and a flush-fitting door with integrated chrome door handles. The car rides on alloy wheels typical of Italian sports and GT cars from the era. The rear is characterized by a steeply sloping rear window, wide rear fenders, and a minimal tail panel with integrated tail lamps, further accentuating its coupé proportions. Although detailed images of the interior are limited, period Moretti models often featured bespoke upholstery in leather or high-grade cloth, wood veneer trims, and upgraded instrumentation. The coupé likely included a modified dashboard layout and premium details beyond what Fiat provided in the production 132. Mechanically, the Moretti Coupé retained the front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout of the Fiat 132. It was typically equipped with either the 1.6-liter or 1.8-liter inline-four engines available in the standard sedan, paired with a five-speed manual gearbox. These engines delivered power outputs between 98 and 105 horsepower. Production of the Fiat 132 Coupé Moretti was extremely limited and carried out on a custom-order basis. Fewer than a dozen examples are believed to have been built, and only a few are known to survive today. The vehicle shown in the photographs—featuring the distinctive six-headlight configuration and painted in red—appears to be one of the few known surviving units, possibly restored or preserved in private ownership. The Fiat 132 Coupé Moretti is emblematic of a transitional period in Italian coachbuilding, where small ateliers sought to reinterpret mass-produced models with unique stylistic flair. It reflects Moretti’s ability to elevate a standard sedan platform into a refined and distinctive grand touring coupé. Today, it remains a rare and valuable artifact of Italian automotive design, admired by collectors for its scarcity, styling, and bespoke craftsmanship.
