01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 126 Lusso is a refined and upgraded version of the Fiat 126, developed by the Turin-based coachbuilder Moretti during the mid-1970s. It maintains the original mechanical layout of the Fiat 126, including the rear-mounted air-cooled two-cylinder engine, four-speed manual gearbox, and rear-wheel drive configuration, while introducing a series of enhancements aimed at increasing comfort, safety, and aesthetic appeal. Constructed on a steel monocoque chassis, the vehicle preserves the compact dimensions and urban agility of the base model, while offering a distinctive exterior and a reimagined interior. The exterior design features fully redesigned front and rear bumpers made from reinforced resin in anthracite grey, offering improved protection including lateral coverage. Chrome elements in stainless steel are applied to the rocker panels and the front fascia. A modern, decorative side stripe emphasizes the model’s distinct identity. Ventilation is improved with rear quarter windows that open on a compass hinge. Additional features include a lockable fuel filler cap, key-operated engine compartment release, and a side mirror styled after rally models. The vehicle is available in a broad range of colors, including solid and metallic finishes such as Gardenia White, Champagne, Amaranto, Bud Green, Positano Yellow, Medium Blue, Flamingo Brown, and various metallic blues and greens. Inside, the vehicle is fitted with anatomically contoured front seats with adjustable headrests, incorporating a safety latch compliant with U.S. standards to prevent forward tilting under emergency braking. The rear seat is similarly shaped for enhanced comfort. Upholstery and door panels are custom designed with special fabric options, and the interior includes a perforated synthetic leather headliner offering both thermal and acoustic insulation. A full moquette carpet covers the floor, and storage solutions include a dashboard shelf and large door pockets. Optional equipment includes metallic paint, foldable front seats, a wooden or leather-wrapped steering wheel, lightweight alloy wheels, and a comprehensive instrument cluster featuring speedometer, tachometer, odometer, fuel level, battery charge indicator, and electronic rev counter. Interior upholstery may be ordered entirely in cloth or with a central fabric insert. Additional options include seat belts and an anti-theft device. The Moretti 126 Lusso represents a unique synthesis of economy and Italian craftsmanship, offering a more luxurious and personalized interpretation of one of Fiat’s most iconic urban vehicles.
