01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Ferrari Mondial is a notable model in Ferrari’s history, introduced in 1980 as a successor to the Dino 308 GT4. While the Dino’s mid-engine design had been technically sound, its Bertone-designed styling had not resonated with buyers, leading Ferrari to seek a fresh approach. The result was the Ferrari Mondial 8, a 2+2 sports car that combined performance with more refined aesthetics. The name “Mondial” was inspired by Ferrari’s victory in the previous year’s Formula 1 World Championship, a tribute also seen in the brand’s earlier models from the 1950s. The Ferrari Mondial was designed by Pininfarina, renowned for creating elegant and timeless automotive designs. Unlike the aggressive, wedge-shaped styling of the 308 GT4, the Mondial adopted a more subdued, flowing design, which was better suited for a 4-seater car. One of the most iconic design features of the Mondial was its large side grilles, a styling element later adopted by the Ferrari Testarossa. The Mondial also marked a step forward for Ferrari in terms of technology and engineering, with a tubular chassis, an elongated wheelbase, and independent suspension. Powered by a 2926 cm³ V8 engine, the Ferrari Mondial produced 214 hp, derived from the engine of the Ferrari 308 GTB, paired with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection. This combination allowed the Mondial to reach a top speed of 220 km/h. To meet stricter anti-pollution regulations, however, export models for markets like the US and Switzerland featured a lower compression engine and a catalytic converter, which reduced power output. US models were also equipped with larger bumpers and additional side marker lights to comply with local homologation standards. The Ferrari Mondial was one of Ferrari’s first cars to incorporate innovative features like a removable rear frame, making engine removal and mechanical work easier—a technique that would later become standard on future Ferrari models. Inside, the Mondial offered a luxurious and modern cockpit with electric buttons replacing traditional pull-rods, four Connolly leather seats, and an onboard computer. The car’s innovative design included an electrically opening sunroof, central locking, electric adjustment for rear-view mirrors, and three electrically operated bonnets—front, middle, and rear—providing easy access to various compartments. While the Mondial 8 did not feature a cabriolet version, the later Mondial Quattrovalvole would offer an open-top variant. The early models of the Mondial were characterized by their single external mirror and black side grilles, which were eventually replaced by double mirrors and grilles that matched the bodywork. The Ferrari Mondial also holds a place in history as the first fuel-injected Ferrari V8 road car, making it an important milestone for the brand in terms of performance and technology. With only 703 units of the Mondial 8 produced in its first series, the Mondial remains a classic in Ferrari’s lineup, offering a perfect blend of Ferrari’s racing heritage and the luxury expected from a high-performance road car.
