01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Ferrari Dino Berlinetta Speciale was introduced in 1965 as a design prototype by Pininfarina, with styling credited to Aldo Brovarone. Built on chassis number 0840, originally associated with the Dino 206 SP racing program, the car represented Ferrari’s first serious exploration of a mid-engined road model. It carried a 1,986 cc V6 engine, a dual overhead camshaft unit with hemispherical combustion chambers and three Weber carburetors, producing around 180 horsepower at 8,000 rpm. The powertrain was mounted longitudinally behind the seats on a lightweight tubular frame, with a four-speed gearbox and independent suspension. The design emphasized aerodynamics and structural efficiency. Its overall form was conceived as a simple lenticular volume, from which roof, wheel arches, and body surfaces were derived. The front end sloped steeply forward to minimize resistance, with headlights enclosed in a perspex cover that extended the curve of the body. The bonnet was smooth, interrupted only by an adjustable slit for radiator cooling. Prominent wings, shaped to house large tyres, blended into clean body sides defined by an upward belt line terminating in a truncated tail. The rear featured a concave window flanked by fins and a large hinged panel providing access to the engine bay. Twin taillights were recessed into a slotted double panel. Additional scoops beneath the side windows supplied air to the brakes. The cockpit adopted functional safety measures unusual for the period: padded fascia, shock-absorbing trim, anti-reflective materials, and bucket seats trimmed in leather. Bulkheads with thermal insulation separated the passenger cell from the engine, and the roof pillars and interior surfaces were padded and covered in elastic leather. Presented first at the 1965 Paris Motor Show and later at Turin and New York, the Berlinetta Speciale directly influenced the production Dino 206 and 246 GT. Its treatment of glazing, proportions, and air intakes anticipated Ferrari’s later mid-engined series. Only a single example was constructed, remaining unique within the marque’s catalog. The car has since been preserved in private and institutional collections and is recognized as a transitional work connecting Ferrari’s racing-derived engineering with road-oriented design.
