01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Ferrari 342 America Cabriolet Vignale, designed by the renowned Giovanni Michelotti, stands as a rare and distinguished example of automotive craftsmanship from the early 1950s. This exceptional vehicle was built with an extended 2,650-mm wheelbase to accommodate the powerful 200-horsepower Lampredi V-12 engine, a testament to Ferrari’s commitment to engineering excellence and performance. With a total production run of only six examples, each car was meticulously crafted for esteemed clientele, including notable figures such as King Leopold of Belgium (chassis 0234AL) and even Enzo Ferrari himself. The chassis of the 342 America Cabriolet featured an unusual characteristic among road-going Ferraris—it was delivered with an even chassis number, bearing the suffix “AL” for “America Lungo,” indicating its long-wheelbase configuration. Furthermore, all examples were equipped with left-hand drive, adding to their exclusivity. Among these rare vehicles, chassis 0232AL holds a particularly special place in Ferrari’s history. It was the very first 342 America built and one of three completed with cabriolet coachwork, crafted by Vignale. The design of this car featured unique slotted taillights recessed into the fenders, adding to its distinctiveness and visual appeal. Following its completion, the Ferrari 342 America Cabriolet underwent rigorous testing by the factory before being delivered to its first owner, Odofranco “Otto” Wild of Muri, Switzerland, on 14 January 1953. Wild was not only a loyal customer of Ferrari but also an avid collector of other rare and coachbuilt European cars of the period, further highlighting the significance of this vehicle within his esteemed collection. It is noteworthy that the car’s radiator bears a tag from a Zurich supplier, indicating that it may have been installed during its original ownership, adding a layer of historical intrigue to its provenance. Overall, the Ferrari 342 America Cabriolet Vignale represents a pinnacle of automotive artistry and luxury, embodying the timeless elegance and performance that define the Ferrari marque.
