01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Ferrari 308 GT/M IMSA (1981) was coachbuilt by Boniolo. Developed during the early 1980s, the 308 GT/M IMSA was created to enhance Ferrari’s presence in motorsport, particularly in the IMSA GT series. The design process involved collaboration between Ferrari engineers and Boniolo, focusing on optimizing aerodynamic performance and lightweight construction methods that were integral to the vehicle’s racing capabilities. Mechanically, the 308 GT/M IMSA featured a chassis that was derived from the standard 308, but it underwent extensive modifications to improve rigidity and reduce weight. The body was constructed using advanced composite materials, contributing to a lower center of gravity and improved handling dynamics. The proportions of the vehicle were altered to accommodate larger wheels and tires, which were necessary for enhanced grip on the racetrack. Powered by an undisclosed engine configuration, the 308 GT/M IMSA was specifically tuned to meet the performance demands of the IMSA racing regulations. The vehicle’s suspension was upgraded to a fully independent design, which provided better stability and response during high-speed maneuvers. Production of the 308 GT/M IMSA was limited to just one unit, making it a rare artifact of automotive engineering and design. Documentation indicates that the vehicle was exhibited in various automotive events, showcasing the collaboration between Ferrari and Boniolo. Surviving examples are recorded in private collections and institutional archives, providing reference for researchers of postwar coachbuilding, particularly in the context of Ferrari’s racing heritage and the influence of coachbuilders like Boniolo.
