01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Boniolo Design Mamba, dated 1980, is a design concept developed by Boniolo as a non-operational design model. The project reflects a phase in Italian coachbuilding centered on experimental form, advanced materials, and speculative vehicle architecture rather than series production or road use. The Mamba was developed using the Ferrari 308 GTB as a dimensional and architectural reference. Its mid-engine proportions, wheelbase relationship, and overall stance derive from the 308, though no functional drivetrain was installed. References to a V8 configuration relate to the conceptual association with the Ferrari platform rather than a completed mechanical system. The vehicle does not operate and was never intended for homologation or testing. The body structure was executed in carbon fiber and Kevlar, materials rarely applied in automotive design studies at the time. These composites were selected to explore lightweight construction, surface rigidity, and future manufacturing possibilities. The exterior design emphasizes angular volumes, low frontal area, and integrated aerodynamic surfaces consistent with late-1970s and early-1980s experimental design language. A notable technical feature is the replacement of conventional rear-view mirrors with optical fiber camera systems. These cameras were designed to transmit rearward images to internal displays, representing an early investigation into camera-based visibility systems decades before their adoption in production vehicles. The interior layout features a three-seat configuration. The driver is positioned centrally, with two passenger seats placed laterally and slightly rearward. This arrangement prioritizes symmetry, forward visibility, and conceptual driver focus. Interior components and finishes reflect prototype intent, with no production-level ergonomics or safety systems. The Mamba was produced as a single example. It remains a static object documented in private collections and institutional design archives. The project serves as a reference for late 20th-century Italian concept car development, composite material experimentation, and alternative vehicle packaging studies.
