01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Ferrari 250 GT Coupé Speciale, chassis 0469GT, is a unique and historically important example of Ferrari’s bespoke grand touring era. Completed by Pininfarina in August 1956, it is the fourth and final car of a very limited series of just four special-bodied 250 GTs styled in the manner of the 410 Superamerica. Of these, three were built without the signature fender vents, making 0469GT an exceptionally rare configuration. Built on chassis tipo 513 with engine tipo 128, the car was finished in a striking Celeste blue body with a contrasting black roof and a luxurious Naturale Connolly leather interior—a two-tone specification rarely seen on Ferraris of the period. Its first owner was Mohammed V, King of Morocco, a key figure in post-colonial North African history. In February 1956, just months before taking delivery of this car, Mohammed V achieved Moroccan independence from French rule and became a symbol of sovereignty and reform. While focused on nation-building, the king still found time to indulge his refined automotive taste, assembling a collection that included a Delahaye parade car and, nearly, the DeSoto Adventurer II. His Ferrari 250 GT, both elegant and exclusive, perfectly reflected the image of a modern monarch. By 1962, 0469GT had made its way to the United States, where it was registered to Ben Pace of Florida. In 1974, it was sold to Walter Medlin, a reclusive collector known for storing his cars long-term. There it remained, unseen for nearly 50 years, until resurfacing in 2023 at the RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction, where it sold for $1.655 million.
