01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Daihatsu Move, since its debut in 1995, has been a pillar of Japan’s kei car revolution—a micro-van engineered to provide maximum space and functionality within minimal dimensions. In 2003, the Move underwent a significant restyling that gave the practical urban runabout a fresh and contemporary identity. The redesign, led by Fabrizio Giugiaro at Italdesign, marked a subtle but meaningful evolution in the model’s visual language. Built to maintain compliance with Japan’s stringent kei-car regulations, the Move continued to offer its core advantages: small-displacement engines (limited to 660cc), featherweight construction, and unmatched urban agility. But in this second-series update, Giugiaro introduced a greater sense of modernity and style to the design brief, proving that even the most utilitarian micro-van could benefit from a designer’s touch. The 2003 Move featured cleaner surfaces, a more integrated front end, and updated lighting elements that gave the car a friendlier, more contemporary face. The tall, boxy profile was preserved to maximize cabin space, but with more finesse in the detailing—making the car look less like a rolling box and more like a thoughtfully designed compact. Inside, the restyled Move offered improved materials and ergonomics, with a dashboard and seating layout designed to enhance visibility, accessibility, and comfort—especially for urban commuters and small families. As always, practicality remained central: folding rear seats, clever storage compartments, and excellent headroom helped make the Move one of the most space-efficient cars on the market. Though modest in size and price, the 2003 Daihatsu Move was a perfect example of design-led problem solving. It showed that high-volume city cars need not sacrifice personality or comfort. Thanks to Giugiaro and Italdesign’s influence, the Move retained its status as a kei-class favorite—now with a dose of Italian design flair, adding charm and character to its already well-established functionality.
