01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Daihatsu Move, one of Japan’s most iconic kei cars, has long served as a benchmark for compact urban mobility. First introduced in 1995, the Move was designed to meet the unique requirements of the Japanese kei-car segment, with its strict regulations on size, engine displacement, and weight. Over the decades, the model evolved through multiple redesigns—and a major turning point came with the launch of the third-generation restyling in 2006 by Italdesign, crafted under the eye of renowned designer Fabrizio Giugiaro. This 2006 redesign, which marked the beginning of the fourth generation of the Move line, represented a stylistic shift away from the utilitarian, boxy form of its predecessors. Giugiaro brought a sleeker, more refined look to the model, aligning it more closely with modern aesthetics while retaining the Move’s signature practicality. The compact dimensions remained ideal for city life, but the silhouette was now more dynamic, with softened edges, recontoured lighting clusters, and a more harmonious balance between cabin space and exterior design. The 2006 Move retained its classification as a kei car, with an engine displacement of 660cc and a lightweight body that made it both fuel-efficient and tax-friendly within Japan’s domestic market. Despite its small footprint, the vehicle offered impressive interior room, aided by its tall roofline and intelligent space utilization—a consistent hallmark of the Move series. Inside, the updated cabin also reflected Giugiaro’s influence, focusing on a clean, functional layout with improved ergonomics and driver-centric design. The Move wasn’t just a tool for transportation—it was becoming a more stylish and comfortable place to spend time. With production of the Move spanning from 1995 to 2023, the 2006 iteration stands out as one of its most important visual turning points. It demonstrated that even within the constraints of kei-car legislation, intelligent design could transform a micro-van into a modern city icon, blending form and function in true Giugiaro fashion.
