01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Cisitalia 303 DF is often affectionately referred to as a “budget-friendly” version of the iconic Cisitalia 202. While it shares a striking aesthetic resemblance to its legendary “cousin” – the car that earned a place of honor at the MoMA in New York for its revolutionary design – the 303 DF was more conventional beneath the surface. Produced between 1951 and 1953, this rare Turin sports car is now highly sought after, with only about 30 examples ever made, offered as both coupés and cabriolets. The bodywork of the Cisitalia 303 DF was crafted by Stabilimenti Farina, borrowing heavily from the celebrated design language of the Berlinetta unveiled four years earlier. Key differences included a slightly higher beltline, the omission of vertical strips in the grille, and solid wheels replacing the earlier spoked rims. These design tweaks gave the 303 DF its own distinct character while still capturing the elegance and sophistication that defined Cisitalia’s automobiles. Underneath its stylish exterior, however, the 303 DF was far less exotic than the 202. The car was built with a more traditional mechanical setup, sharing numerous components with the Fiat 1100 E. This included the engine and other drivetrain elements, which made the 303 DF more accessible and easier to maintain, though it lacked the cutting-edge engineering of the 202. Designed by the talented Giovanni Savonuzzi, the 303 DF prioritized simplicity and practicality while still delivering charm and refinement. The 303 DF debuted at the 1952 Turin Auto Salon, where it turned heads for its timeless design and understated allure. Today, this rare gem from Cisitalia’s history represents an intriguing chapter for collectors and enthusiasts. While it might not have reached the iconic status of the 202, the 303 DF offers an exceptional blend of style, exclusivity, and Turin craftsmanship, making it a fascinating piece of automotive history.
