01 / THE STORY
History & context
The 1954 Imperial Limousine built for Pope Pius XII was a custom-bodied saloon featuring a Ghia design that drew from the earlier K-310 experimental model. This particular vehicle was part of a limited production effort by Chrysler to create a prestige saloon intended for high-profile clients, with bodywork that reflected advanced styling cues developed during the early 1950s. The front treatment adopted a grille configuration influenced by the K-310, characterized by a broad, horizontal layout and integrated headlamp housings, which would later inform Chrysler’s design language in production models. The example prepared for the Vatican was adapted for formal use, with a raised roofline to facilitate ease of access and increased interior headroom. The interior was configured with luxurious trim appropriate to its purpose, finished with high-grade upholstery materials and fittings designed to accommodate the needs of papal service. Mechanically, the car retained the standard Chrysler Imperial underpinnings of the period, including a V8 engine and automatic transmission, with emphasis placed on smooth operation and comfort over performance. Several similar units were built for private and institutional clients, each sharing the general design treatment derived from the K-310 but customized to varying degrees depending on their end use. These vehicles occupied a transitional phase in Chrysler’s development of bespoke and semi-bespoke models during the early postwar period, representing both a technical showcase and a diplomatic gesture. The Vatican example remains one of the better documented vehicles of this series, offering a reference point for the interpretation of Chrysler’s limited-production special bodies of the era.
