01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Brilliance BS6, known in China as the Zhonghua Zunchi and more recently as the Brilliance M1, is a mid-size sedan produced by Brilliance Auto in the People’s Republic of China. Originally developed by the renowned Italian design firm Italdesign Giugiaro, the Brilliance BS6 was first launched in December 2000 under the name Brilliance Zhonghua. The collaboration with Giugiaro brought a European design influence to the Chinese market, blending style with the growing demand for domestic sedans. The Brilliance BS6 featured a front-end design that bore a striking resemblance to the Daewoo Leganza, a model well-known for its own sleek and modern styling. This resemblance helped the BS6 establish a more contemporary and refined look in the mid-size sedan segment, aligning with the design trends of the time while maintaining its distinct identity. While the Brilliance BS6 was developed with a focus on Chinese consumer preferences, it also reflected Italdesign Giugiaro’s hallmark design philosophy, which emphasizes elegance, functionality, and modernity. The car offered a balanced combination of comfort and practicality, making it a competitive choice in the mid-size market. Over time, the BS6 went through various updates and rebranding, eventually being marketed as the M1. Despite its evolution, the car maintained its reputation for being an affordable and well-designed vehicle that played a key role in Brilliance Auto’s strategy to attract both domestic and international customers. The Brilliance BS6 stands as a testament to the success of international design collaborations in the automotive industry, showcasing Italdesign Giugiaro’s influence on Chinese automotive development and further cementing the global reach of the Brilliance brand.
