01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Bertone Mantide, a stunning concept car designed by Jason Castriota, made its debut in 2009 through a series of YouTube videos known as Project M. Based on the formidable Corvette ZR1, the Mantide boasted exceptional performance figures, surpassing even its already impressive counterpart. This was achieved through advanced aerodynamics and significant weight reduction measures. Every aspect of the Mantide was meticulously crafted to enhance performance. Carbon fiber was utilized for all body panels, interior trim, seats, and even the wheels, resulting in a substantial weight reduction of 220 lb (100 kg) compared to the ZR1. Under the hood, the Mantide was powered by a supercharged 6,162 cc V8 engine, delivering a remarkable 638 bhp (476 kW) and 604 lb⋅ft (819 N⋅m) of torque. The aerodynamic improvements of the Mantide were equally impressive, with drag reduced by 25% (Cd 0.298) and a 30% increase in downforce compared to the ZR1. These enhancements translated to exceptional performance on the road, with the Mantide capable of accelerating from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in just 3.2 seconds and reaching a top speed of 351 km/h (218 mph). Despite initial reports of Bertone planning to produce 10 Mantides, only one was ever made, specially crafted for car collector Dan Watkins. In October 2019, this singular masterpiece was put up for sale at Autosport Designs in Long Island. Sporting a fresh coat of “Bianco Fuji” paint and boasting a mileage of 10,000 miles, the Bertone Mantide represented the pinnacle of automotive design and engineering, a true collector’s item destined to leave a lasting impression wherever it roamed.
