01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Alfa Romeo Visconti is a concept car developed by Italdesign and introduced in 2004. Its engineering base is the Premium Platform created by Alfa Romeo for models derived from the Brera concept, including the 156 saloon, Sportwagon, coupé and spider. For the Visconti, the platform was adapted with a longer wheelbase and reinforced structural sections to support a larger body format and increased mechanical load. Overall length measures approximately 4,955 mm, width 1,896 mm and height 1,474 mm. Power is supplied by an Alfa Romeo 3.2-litre V6 biturbo petrol direct-injection JTS engine, generating 405 hp and 680 Nm of torque. The engine is mounted longitudinally and coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission. Drivetrain configuration uses permanent four-wheel drive, with integrated rear-wheel steering to improve high-speed stability and low-speed manoeuvrability. The vehicle employs a VDC system, Alfa Romeo’s interpretation of ESP, for dynamic control. Active stabiliser bars further assist in limiting body roll and maintaining chassis composure under varying load conditions. The suspension setup consists of independent layouts on both axles, calibrated to support the concept’s mass and distribution. Braking uses large-diameter discs with electronically managed force distribution. The steering system is electric-hydraulic, configured for variable response depending on speed and driver input. Tyre and wheel dimensions were selected specifically to support the concept’s performance potential and aerodynamic targets. The body is a five-door fastback structure designed with an emphasis on aerodynamic efficiency and packaging. The front adopts an enlarged Alfa Romeo shield grille and integrated lighting units. The roofline descends into a steeply angled rear hatch, reducing turbulence at the tail. Panel surfaces follow continuous curvature to minimise drag. The interior accommodates four passengers and includes a central tunnel housing drivetrain components, along with instrumentation derived from contemporary Alfa Romeo production layouts. The Visconti remained a one-off design study and was not developed for series production.
